Aircraft Noise Calculation with sonAIR

State-of-the-art Simulation

sonAIR

For the simulation of aircraft noise

Based on the physical emission model sonAIR and the precise sound propagation model sonX, individual approach and departure procedures can be simulated and optimized from an acoustic perspective. In addition, yearly noise calculations and future scenarios can be calculated and compared.

The sonAIR calculation model was developed on behalf of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) and the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) by Empa’s Laboratory for Acoustics / Noise Control and implemented as standalone add-in – based on D-noise – by n-Sphere.

The core of sonAIR is a source emission model for the detailed description of the direction-dependent noise emissions depending on the flight condition (power setting and flight configuration such as flap and landing gear position). The sonX model from Empa is used for the sound propagation calculation, which allows the simulation of sound propagation as a function of ground effects, meteorological influences and sound reflections from buildings, forests and rock faces.

Your advantage: bundled expertise

Are you looking for a strong partner for aircraft noise calculation with sonAIR?
We have implemented the sonAIR calculation model as an add-in for ArcGIS Pro – and have proven aviation and aircraft noise experts in-house.

With our expertise you can:

  • Set up your aircraft noise project professionally – from data acquisition to the final calculation and evaluation

  • Optimize low-noise approach and departure procedures – we analyse the impact of new procedures and aircraft types on your flight operations

  • Reliably calculate special cases such as stationary noise or helicopter movements on the ground, including obstacle effects, terrain and building reflections

  • Create high-resolution 3D visualizations with noise grids in second-by-second time resolution

  • Have individual extensions developed for sonAIR – from new functions in the add-in to modern web tools for comparisons, visualization and the rapid calculation of new noise scenarios
