D-noise
From Data Preparation via Noise Calculation to Scenario Analysis
D-noise for ArcGIS Pro
D-noise is a GIS-based solution for the calculation, analysis and visualization of noise, as well as for the planning of noise abatement measures. D-noise is based on Esri ArcGIS for Desktop and is available as an add-in for ArcGIS Pro.
In addition to calculations with the new Swiss models sonAIR, sonRAIL, sonROAD18 and sonARMS for aircraft, road, railway and shooting noise calculations, D-noise comprises the former Swiss models StL86+, sonROAD04 and Semibel and offers interfaces for noise calculations with CadnaA.
D-noise can be used to carry out all work steps from data preparation and noise calculation to evaluation, report generation and publication of the results. A large number of interfaces enable the results to be made available on geoportals, output in the format of the minimum geodata model (MGDM) for main and other roads, or further use of the data with D-noise web services.
Functionality

Noise calculation
- Calculation of road and tram noise with sonROAD18 emission model and sound propagation model DIN ISO 9613-2
- Calculation of railway noise with the sonRAIL emission model and SEMIBEL sound propagation model or DIN ISO 9613-2
- Sound exposure calculation from attenuation data
- Attenuations are imported and managed in D-noise
- Changes to the source can be calculated efficiently and with great time savings in different versions
Noise assessment
By default, the noise assessment will be carried out as a building assessment separated into residential and commercial use. The dominant façade point or optionally the loudest façade point are determined. An equivalent floor-specific assessment of residential units can be carried out.
Evaluations with D-noise analytics
D-noise analytics is a powerful evaluation tool that can be used to create and reuse any number of queries. Whether statistics on people exposed to noise levels above limit values, extracts per municipality or evaluations using sound exposure grids – (almost) anything is possible with D-noise analytics.
Automated reports and export interfaces
D-noise offers the option of automatic report generation, including map extracts. There are also predefined export formats to MGDM, but individual interfaces can also be configured. Whether for internal purposes or for publication in a web GIS. The data can also be exported from D-noise to CadnaA. Our D-noise web services offer the best option for providing your calculations.
Data preparation
- Flexibly configurable interface for incremental data import
- Modeling of road sections and noise barriers in 3D
- Modeling of bridges (width and shielding)
- Automated matching of road sections from different data sets
based on the geometry - Conversion of buildings with roof shapes from multipatch data into a CadnaA-compatible format
- Building subdivision based on building entrance coordinates
- Generation of acoustically optimized elevation points based on DTM
- Linking of statistical information on the resident population and workplaces
- Floor-specific usage information based on the GWR apartments
- Special features in road noise
- Free definition of traffic data according to vehicle category
or breakdown using SWISS10 converter - Automated division into lanes for detailed analysis
- Conversion of CPX measurement into pavement spectra
- Consideration of acoustic properties of the ground
in the sound propagation calculation
- Free definition of traffic data according to vehicle category

Supported noise models
The noise models in the son series are based on Empa’s latest research findings on the generation and propagation of noise and therefore provide an exceptionally realistic and high-quality representation of a wide variety of noise situations.
The noise models for sonROAD18 and sonRAIL are included as modules in D-noise, while sonAIR and sonARMS have been implemented as standalone add-ins based on D-noise.
Road Noise | sonROAD18
D-noise with sonROAD18 for calculating road traffic noise in accordance with Annex 3, NAO, taking into account engine and rolling noise as well as sound emission characteristics depending on vehicle classes. In addition to the SWISS10+ vehicle categories, tram noise on roads can also be calculated.
Railway Noise | sonRAIL
D-noise with sonRAIL for calculating railway noise in accordance with Annex 4, NAO. In addition to annual exposure levels, the impact of noise protection measures at the source and along the propagation path can be simulated.
Aircraft Noise | sonAIR
The sonAIR solution as an add-in for ArcGIS Pro for calculating aircraft noise in accordance with Annex 5, NAO. In addition to annual exposure, forecasts, and scenarios, sonAIR can also be used to simulate individual flights and optimize low-noise approach and departure procedures.
Shooting Noise | sonARMS
sonARMS has been integrated into D-noise, providing a user-friendly GUI for shooting noise calculations in accordance with Annexes 7 and 9 of the NAO.
